Case study: How I Adapted my Business & Schedule When I Took on a 5-day Teaching Contract

In this episode I’m giving you a full break-down of how I have adapted my business and my schedule after taking on a 5-day teaching contract in a school.  I will be sharing how I created an office suite and marketing plan to fit in with my teaching contract.  Also, what I do to assess how it’s going and to outsource what I can.

Let’s dive in!

Timeline: -

  • 2016 – graduated Year 12

  • 2017 – started teaching degree and business at the same time.  Booked my first client.

  • 2018 – researched business world and booked more clients

  • 2019 – went from 1 client in 2017 to 27 clients in late 2018 early 2019

  • 2020 – finished my teaching degree

  • 2021 – Started Relief Teaching and dropped most of my clients to focus on a few key one-on-one clients

  • 2022 – Continued Relief Teaching 1 to 4 days per week.  I also had a 50/50 split in my business involving client work and coaching.  Commenced an Instagram project with a friend called Simple Social House (check it out on  http://www.simplesocialhouse.com for more details.)  I was also running my Accountability Club.

  • 2023 – April - I will be commencing a 5-day per week teaching contract while running my www.withhannahandco.com business and continuing to help run Simple Social House on Instagram.

Adapting my Schedule

First, I had to block out time for my teaching role.  School hours run from before 9am to 3pm but there are add-ons like lesson planning, driving to school and getting ready for the day.   I blocked out the times 8am to 4pm.  This may vary but a general starting point.

Secondly, I then changed my schedule to reflect what works for me being an early riser.  I have 10 hours per week that I can dedicate to my business.  This involves two hours from 6am to 8am where I can focus on my office suite.

Revamping my Office Suite

I revamped my office suite using the following 4 areas: -

  1. Content and marketing – how someone finds you, follows you, connects and books with you.

  2. Offerings – how you are able to make money and delivering on that service or product.

  3. Operations – team meetings, backend of systems, bookkeeping etc.

  4. Projects – one-off monthly goals you have set.

My Team

My team is definitely essential in supporting me with this new season I am in.  It’s not realistic for me to do all of these tasks.  There’s always a trade off with time and money.  Currently, I have the budget to outsource some of my tasks for example: -

  • Podcast – outsourcing to a podcast editor.  I have found an excellent podcast manager, Sharon at www.justkeepodcasting.com

  • Blog – I outsource someone to create and upload my blog from the podcast.

In summary, what is this season requiring of me?  What do I want to prioritise in this season?  I always start with what my schedule going to look like. I then create the marketing and office suite around that schedule. Lastly, at the end of the month, I look at the data to see what is working and what is not, and I tweak this to reflect that.
